Here we have a 3 hour DVD looking back to the late 1970s and throughout the 1980s at Coalville, a little freight depot in Leicester shire. All we have to see now on our Railways are class 66ers and glorified DMU's so why not go back to the 80s and enjoy how it used to be, the DVD contains both footage and an hour and a half's worth of still photo's. The footage was filmed by ex-Coalville Driver Barry Carlisle and includes a class 58 cab-ride to fetch in ex-derailed tar tanks from off the Leicester line they came to grief in Coleorton cutting in 1987. Then there is another cab-ride in a 58 but this time its taking coal to the now defunct Willington Power Station, this is interesting to anyone wondering about MGR-operations as slow speed is selected and all cab audible sounds can be heard. Coalville Depot as many will remember will always be remembered for its well attended and overly enjoyed (by the enthusiast scene) open days, Barry filmed both 1987 and 1989 open days, they begin with the preperation of them, and scenes are filmed on the Saturday when visiting loco's and cavilcades began to arrive, it then shows the shunting and berthing of engines and trains, a sight not seen by the many visiters who arrived on the Sunday, he then films the actual days, the naming ceremony of St Christopher's Childrens home (47348) he even catches anger as an oblivious Railwayman walks in front of many photographers while they attempt to film and photograph a shunting steam locomotive, many will relate and remember the flavour of the old BR open days, and for those that dont this footage will soon bring it all back. Barry also attended the Anniversary of the Midland Railway at Derby, here he filmed Shunting Steam Loco's, Loco and stock hard at work, blue DMU's, old livery HSTs and shunting 47s this was 1989. Finally when most people have overdosed on nostalgia there is one and a half hours worth of photo's, these are accompanied by music from the Grimethorpe Colliery band, you can almost smell coal, photo's are of Railwaymen ie Drivers, Guards, Signalmen, Shunters, Train Crew Supervisers, Loco inspectors, and Clerks, there are loco's on shed, in Pits and Power Stations or en-route with coal or stone trains, or on ferry sets and cavilcades,Signal Boxes, sidings, derailed and railed, there is something here for everyone but please give your self time as it can go on, its certainly value for money! Lastly wether you buy the DVD or not you may like to read my on-line book Life on the Leicester line, this is all about Coalville a once proud little depot and its staff, you can access this free of charge by typing in http://www.biffo.net/arts/cville/lifemain.htm when you've read some of this it may wet your appitite to watch the DVD, Coalville Depot is to re-open shortly after nearly 16 years to FM Rail and another era will dawn at this once busy location so you'll probobly see the modern 21st Century Coalville Depot, but here is an opertunity to take a peek into the past to see the old Coalville and its Ex- Gritty BR-Railwaymen.To purchase a DVD go to eBay or call - 01283-534444 or 07952227945 or by sending a cheque payable to Anthony Gregory at 12 Aviation Lane Burton-on-Trent Staffs DE139TJ I will send one off straight away, the DVD costs £7.99 with £1.00 P+P Tue 23rd May 2006
